Kununurra

Kununurra - named for a local Aboriginal word meaning "meeting of big waters" - was gazetted in the early 1960s as a service town for the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. Today, Kununurra's population numbers 6,500 with an additional 2,000 people scattered throughout 6WR's extensive service area.

Agriculture around Kununurra returns more than $65 million per year. The extensive varieties grown in the area range from horticultural crops like melons, bananas, mangoes and pumpkins, to field crops such as cotton, maize, chick peas, sunflower and soybeans.

Although sugar cane is the most planted crop averaging in excess of 160 tonnes per hectare, commercially grown sandalwood trees are fast becoming popular.

Kununurra is the eastern gateway to the Kimberley attracting more than 165,000 visitors each year. When visiting the area tune to 6WR on 693AM, and Kununurra Tourist Radio on 87.6 FM.
